An Olive Tree Sunset.
Five minutes
away by
car are two quiet beaches, Agios Ierusalim (also known as Jerusalem beach) and Alaties (shown left)
a tiny cove with its rocky outcrops, both great to explore and each with its own small taverna. Just over five minutes brings you to the village of Maganos where you
can sit drinking coffee or having a snack in the kafeneon with the locals or buy
fresh fruit and vegetables. Another ten minutes brings you to the bustle of the
picturesque port of Fiskardo with its shops, its deep sense of history and
vibrant and colourful activity.
Alaties is the nearest beach five minutes drive away, a quiet rock-enclosed cove with a sand and pebble beach. It's named after the saltpans once used there to harvest salt from the seawater and is only twenty minutes walk or a five minute drive away from the villa. A small taverna serves food until long after the sun has set. Shown here is Ierusalim Beach, also close by, with its two pebbly coves and a taverna serving food, some of it grown on the premises! Fiskardo owes its name to a Norman mercenary called Robert Guiscard and it is said that his son is buried here.
Towards Fiskardo there's Dafnoudi, a quiet beach you have to walk to, or Emblisi, seen here, where some of the locals come for a late afternoon bathe. Beyond Fiskardo there's Foki beach (seen below) set in a quiet bay surrounded by trees. Assos too has a pretty beach with tavernas close by. Further away on the east side of the island there are many more quiet beaches to be found by those who like to explore further afield.
